Jigsaw Youth

Jigsaw Youth came out of Staten Island’s DIY music community, drawing on punk independence and the heavy guitar sounds of ’90s alternative rock. Maria Alvarez’s forceful vocals and the band’s distorted, groove-driven arrangements give the songs a physical presence. Their name comes from a Bikini Kill song, reflecting an interest in making space onstage for voices and perspectives that have too often been pushed to the side.
