A pennant in their first season

The Pelicans joined the Southern League in 1887 and immediately won the pennant. Across the decades that followed, the club became a central part of professional baseball in New Orleans, playing through changes in leagues, ballparks, and the city itself.

In 1910, Joe Jackson led the league with a .354 batting average as the Pelicans won another pennant. New Orleans repeated in 1911. Those early teams place the Pelicans inside the story of baseball’s growth across the South, giving the club’s historic marks a meaning that reaches beyond a familiar bird emblem.
