The Sugar Kings brought International League baseball to Havana in 1954, giving Cuban fans a Triple-A club connected to the American minor league system. Their home games placed an international city and its deep baseball culture inside the league’s regular circuit.
In 1959, amid the uncertainty of the Cuban Revolution, Havana won the minor league championship. The franchise relocated to Jersey City in 1960. The Sugar Kings’ brief run remains a distinct chapter in Cuban and minor league baseball, remembered through the club’s name, championship, and enduring visual identity.
