A name chosen by Portland

Portland was part of the Pacific Coast League’s first season in 1903, initially playing as the Browns. After a brief period as the Giants, the club became the Beavers in 1906 through a newspaper naming contest. That same year, Portland won the league pennant.

The Beavers won four more pennants between 1910 and 1914, with players such as Dave Bancroft and pitchers Vean Gregg and Bill James helping shape that early success. Their name became a lasting part of Portland baseball, carried across later franchises, changing ballparks, and generations of Rose City supporters.
