Baseball with a Hollywood address

The original Hollywood Stars arrived in 1926 and shared Los Angeles’ Wrigley Field with the Angels. That first club won championships in 1929 and 1930 before moving to San Diego. A second Stars franchise brought the name back in 1938, opening Gilmore Field the following year.

Owner Bob Cobb sold shares to figures from the film industry, including Gary Cooper and Cecil B. DeMille. Celebrities filled the stands, but the baseball was serious: the Stars built a fierce rivalry with the Angels and became a defining part of Southern California’s Pacific Coast League years.
